The Ho Teaching Hospital Laboratory has taken a significant step towards achieving ISO 15189 Accreditation following the successful completion of a pre-assessment exercise conducted by the Ghana Accreditation Services (GAS) on Thursday, June 4, 2026. The exercise aimed at evaluating the Laboratory’s readiness for the Initial Assessment required for accreditation under the internationally recognised ISO 15189 standard for medical laboratories.
During the assessment, the GAS Assessor reviewed the Laboratory’s systems, processes, and operational practices to determine their conformity with the stringent quality and competence requirements of the standards. At the exit conference held after the exercise, the Assessor described the pre-assessment as “very successful,” commending the Laboratory for its clear demonstration of a robust quality management system and its commitment to continuous improvement. The successful pre-assessment marks another important milestone in the Hospital’s accreditation journey and paves the way for the Laboratory to undergo the Initial Assessment towards attaining ISO 15189 Accreditation. The Laboratory’s progress reflects years of dedication to quality improvement and excellence in patient care.
In 2023, the Ho Teaching Hospital Laboratory was assessed alongside laboratories from 20 hospitals across the country. Out of the participating facilities, only five were selected for mentorship and accreditation support, with Ho Teaching Hospital emerging as one of the top two institutions chosen for the programme. Since then, the Laboratory has undergone rigorous bi-monthly assessments under a structured mentorship initiative designed to strengthen quality management systems, enhance operational efficiency, and improve service delivery. The most recent assessment, conducted in February 2026, earned the Laboratory a Four-Star rating, a notable achievement that qualified it for the current accreditation process. Dr Isaac Wemegah, Director, Allied Health Services, Ho Teaching Hospital, said the successful GAS pre-assessment reinforced the Hospital’s commitment to delivering high-quality, reliable laboratory services and brought the Institution a step closer to joining the ranks of internationally accredited medical laboratories
