The Department started as one of the first Department at the onset of the hospital in November 1999. It started with one consultant Surgeon Dr. GRK Nyamuameh who also doubled as the founding Medical Director of the hospital, an Orthopeadics Surgeon Dr. E. K. Agbeme and a few Medical Officers. There were some specialists in the areas of allied Surgery, two Dental Surgeons Dr. Crossby Oppong Yeboah and the late Dr. Dzebu an ENT specialist Dr. John Letsa, an Opthalmologist the late Dr. Fredoline Anyomi and a few Medical Officers including the current Medical Director.
The founding Nurses of the department includes the current Nurse Manager and the assistant (Madam Innocentia Gborgblorvor and Vida Akoto).
The department now has 3 general Surgeons, two Onchologists and 3 Orthopeadic Surgeon. There is an army of Medical Officers who support the work of the specialists. The current head of the department is Nelson K. Affram. The department conducts a wide range of surgical procedures. Elective General surgery is done on Tuesdays and Thursdays, Elective Urology on Mondays and Elective Orthopeadics on Mondays and Thursdays.
The Surgery Department consists of units such as Male and Female Surgical Wards, Urology, Anaesthesia and the Operating Theatres.
There is an effective collaboration among the units mentioned above to ensure the effective operation of the Surgical Department. Both major and minor surgeries spanning from General Surgeries to Gynaecological, Obstetrics, Eye, Urology and Orthopaedic surgeries are done in the hospital.
Through collaboration with other establishments, there were three (3) major outreaches within the year dubbed Operation Smile which saw to lip palates and Operation Hernia (Research) and Operation Hernia traditional which are for men only.
